VoiceThread is offering free educator accounts for all k-12 classroom educators. These free accounts are identical to the Pro account in almost every aspect. After you are signed in and on the Browse, Create, or Myvoice pages click the button up top that says 'Go Pro' and then click the link in the next window that says 'K-12 classroom educators'.

But of course it's true that nothing in life is truly free, so here is what we want in return:

    1. You must, in fact, be a K-12 classroom educator and sign up using your school assigned e-mail address (this is important, and we'll need to occasionally verify it)
    2. You must continue to invent and explore with VoiceThread.
    3. We are counting on your feedback and ideas so that we may continue to grow while remaining simple to use.
    4. You must help each other. Technology in the classroom is not a fad, it's here to stay, but it needs a dedicated community that shares ideas and success stories in order to develop best practices.

That's it. If the deal sounds good to you then apply for the free account by hitting the 'Go Pro' button. We'll send a confirmation e-mail to your school based e-mail address. Just click the link in the confirmation e-mail and you're all set.

p.s. If you don't get the e-mail make sure to check you spam folder, it can get stuck in there sometimes.

Thank you for offering the Pro version to K-12 educators. I am having so much fun with it! Yesterday I shared it at a staff meeting to a number of enthusiastic teachers. The next day, several individuals had already created their first voice thread. The ease of creation is very powerful.
  1.
We really appreciate having a Pro version free for educators. VoiceThread is a fantastic tool that's simple yet stylish to use in the classroom for learning/teaching purposes as it lends itself so well to a variety of authentic and relevant activities. In the words of my students ..... VoiceThread rocks!
  2.
VoiceThread is a perfect way to get teachers to move to online web tools. I love digital stories and it seems to me that using VoiceThread is a great way to create pieces easily, without a lot of software and tech skill.
Kevin Hodgson and I are currently presenting a workshop for the K12 Online Conference focused on using online tools to create digital stories. We are using VoiceThread to have workshop participants try it out.
What's cool too, is that other workshop presenters are also using VoiceThread. I like being in this web community as a pioneer.
Can't wait to experiment with this new adventure.
    THanks Ben,

This is a really great 2.0 tool. Thanks for giving it to educators! Another way to get students engaged:)

Our Year 5 class here in South Australia is about to get started on using VoiceThread as part of a collaborative project with other Year 5 classes across the globe. I am really impressed with the ease of use and will certainly be encouraging other colleagues to be using it, through our Catholic Education System's online forum on Web 2.0 tools. Thanks.

I would like an educator's account, but our school email ends with ".org"

    What to do?

Also, how do you delete an account?

    Thank you

    Hi Erica,

it's ok if your school address ends in .org, go ahead and fill out the form. Also, I know this sounds strange but we don't yet have a way to completely delete your account, we're working out the details and should be done soon. The difficulty is deciding how to handle a user's comments on other peoples Threads, do they disappear when their account is deleted? Anyway, we'll get it worked out soon.

    Thanks,

    -Steve

I love Voice Thread for educators. I am sharing this with a group of teachers in a Writing in the 21st Century Academy and I would love to get them the Pro Account.

I have 2 questions. We are in the Amphitheater School District and our email address is username@amphi.com - we don't have the typical k12.az.us.edu email address. Can we still go pro? Also, When I click on Browse, Create or MyVoice, I don't see the Go Pro button - I see the shopping cart, but when I click on it I don't see the link that says K-12 classroom educators. What are we missing?
Thanks for a great tool for students.

  5.

    Hi Peggy,

you should be o.k. we don't absolutely require a .edu address(we just look a little closer if it's not;) It's possible you're not logged in and that's why you don't see the 'Go Pro' button. Make sure you are and let me know if it doesn't appear.

and thanks so much for the praise, we really appreciate it.

    Steve,
Thank you for such a quick reply. I know that I am logged in and I even had others come and try and follow your directions and were unable to find the Go Pro Button. I even went and looked in the Classic version too to see if I could find out how to sign up so I could tell my teachers.

    Hi Peggy,

could you tell me your e-mail address that you're using for this account? Not here, but send it to help@voicethread.com and I'll look up your account to see what status it has. Maybe that will tell us something.

    Hi Steve,
I am having the same problem as Peggy. I am logged in but see no "Go Pro" button to push anywhere. I can't even find the shopping cart someone else refered to above. I want to do a Martin Luther King Jr. Voice Thread and show it during our school's program in honor of him. Help please. I need the pro options to proceed. Thank you,
    Tara
  8.
    Hi Steve,
I signed up at home with my teaching e-mail address. At home I saw the "Go Pro" Button but not on my school computer. It must be blocked by the school filter?? Now I have the problem at home that after I signed up and in the "Go Pro" button is now a shopping cart only. When I click on it there is no "educator's" button to click. I am just taken to pay for it. I am sending my school e-mail account to the address you asked Peggy to in the above forum response. I really want to do this when I return to school on Monday with my students for the Martin Luther King program on Friday. Help please.
    Thanks,
    Tara

Hello, I have an email address that ends in @notes.k12.hi.us and I have not been able to sign up for the educator account. I fill out all the boxes and they all show teh green check except for the email and re-enter email one at the bottom. I'm not sure if this is because of the weird email address or what. Anyway, I am really excited about using this for my classroom, please let me know how I should proceed because three voicethreads will not be nearly enough for me. Thank you for your time. Eric

If this is free for educators, why the $10 verification fee popup?

This looks so cool - I want to use it, and I appreciate the free account - but is it? It upgraded to Pro fine - what is this other fee-ful thing?

    Thanks,

    Hi Kris,

Sorry for the pop up, feels a little like an ad doesn't it?;)

The Educator account is free, but if you want to work in the Ed.VoiceThread network there's a one time $10 verification fee because it's an accountable network where there are no free accounts. But you don't need to join it if you don't want to. Let me know if you keep getting that pop up, it sounds like it could be a bug.

    Thanks,

Can I delete my student's voicethreads? This would be a useful tool. Also, if I delete student, do all her voicethreads delete automatically?
  10.
I recently tried signing up for an Ed.VoiceThread account. I paid through Google checkout for a one month subscription. I received the confirmation email from Google, but every time I log into VoiceThread, it says it's still processing my credit card information. I would like to begin using this tool with my students.

    Joan,
As a teacher of students, you are by default an editor of their content but no, you cannot currently delete your student's VoiceThreads. Only the creator of a VoiceThread can delete that VoiceThread. And, removing a student from your school or class does not remove all of their VoiceThreads automatically.
  12.
    Jamie,
Processing can take up to 20 minutes to get all credit card verification for the payment from Google. Once that's been completed, you should be all set.

I want to sign up for the classroom account. If I were to sign up now, would my account go from February to February?
  14.
Hello again, I never heard back from anyone regarding my last post, I am a high school teacher in Hawaii and I just got access to a computer lab that I teach out of all day now, so this would be an amazing thing to be able to use with my students. Is there any reason why I would not be permitted to sign up? I tried using my school email to create a different account, but it wouldn't even let me register that one. If I just go ahead and sign up for pro can i get it reimbursed or something? Please let me know, thank you- Eric

Never mind, just used my gmail and that worked, don't know why it didn't take my school address, thanks- Eric

    Erik,

The monthly classroom subscription last one month from the date of purchase. For instance, if you were to get a one month subscription today, it would be valid until this time next month. Think of it more as a monthly "window". If you have any additional questions, feel free to let us know.

I work at a university in Australia and want to use this tool for free for a new 2nd year education course on e-learning where I am the tutor. It starts in 2 weeks and this seems to be the best multimedia enabled tool I've found. Of course I am at a different level to your usual k12 account holders. Do I need to pay?

    Andrew
  17.
    Andrew,
The short answer, yes (naturally, we'd like it to be free for everyone, but we have to make sure we can afford to keep the lights on). =)

The reason I say, short answer, is because within the next few weeks we are going to be rolling out a solution (as we have with K-12 and ed.voicethread.com) specifically geared for higher-ed (and situations like yours) classrooms and institutions. We are working on developing tools that will easily allow professors and technologists at higher-ed institutions manage their institutional access to VoiceThread. Be on the look-out for that soon.

Thanks for your interest in VoiceThread!

I have been a BIG promoter of voicethread and love how it is "finally" growing . such a great tool and as big a leap for technology as the pencil was!

Thanks for setting up and believing in educators. This just makes what you are doing that much more substantial. In my own area (I'm a teacher trainer for English as a second and foreign language) it is a crucial tool and one which will accelerate the learning of students. I'm endebted for the account and will continue to shout out about voicethread!

I set up an educator account and still had to pay $10.00. In my opinion, that isn't exactly free to educators.
  19.

    Jane -
The $10 verification fee is for access to Ed.VoiceThread (http://ed.voicethread.com/) only, which solves many security issues for K-12 education related to the free version of VoiceThread (ie. anyone having the ability to get a free account). There are still free K-12 educator accounts on the main VoiceThread site. To learn more about the benefits of Ed.VoiceThread, take a look at the about page: http://ed.voicethread.com/about/. Please let us know if anything doesn't make sense or isn't clear, as we're working hard to improve VoiceThread everyday.

ed.voicethread.com is still not working for me. Can't upload! Sent you a sample .doc yesterday to support, but have received no reply. I did receive feedback from this forum that a fix would be coming soon.

I am the tech coordinator for my building and I was hoping to show this Web 2.0 tool at an upcoming workshop. At this rate, I might have to drop it because of the problems I am experiencing. Stability is definitely something that has to exist for the tool to be useful. Nothing will turn a teacher off than wasting their time expecting something to work and then it won't! Sorry to sound negative, but I am just trying to tell you the truth!

We did in fact receive your email and file. Thanks for sending that to us, definitely helped! We have now pushed a fix for this issue. Please restart your browser and try uploading your problem file(s) again and let us know if that fixed it for you. Thanks again for your help!

I'm trying to upload a writing assignment my students did and use ed.voicethread.com to add my corrections and suggestions. I got 9 done this morning and now this new problem surfaced!

I'll upload a picture of what I see when I go to add a text comment on my jleggett@molineschools.org page.

    Hi - I have a few questions.
1.I signed up as an educator and then added my classroom. I think I ended up paying $20.00 in total ($10 for one time verification fee and $10 monthly fee). I thought I read somewhere that the $10 verification fee will be waived if I signed up my classroom. Is this correct and if so, how will this happen?

    2. The classroom tutorial only takes me as far as adding my students to the classroom account. So, I added, but now have no idea how they actually sign in. I've been browsing and looking for the answer to this question with no answer in sight... Please direct me in the right direction!

    Thanks.

Hi I decided to try your ed.voicethread for $10 month. In your description for the educator service it reads that there ar eno limitations in students accounts. Well, my students last visited the lab at the end of march and many of their accounts are still "pending". I have 80 students and I need all of them to be in my class! Please help! We have very important projects coming up using voicethread!

    Dear Silvia,

We are hard at working completely revamping our management tool for educators to hopefully remove some of the confusion with the system. For instance, the word "pending" means that your students must first login to their old VoiceThread accounts and click the 'Yes' button that asks them if they would like to join your classroom. Since any basic user account could be potentially added to a classroom, this check serves as a security measure that allows the user to reject or accept the request. So, simply have your students login to their old accounts and click the 'Yes' button, then on your screen the words (pending) will disappear.

I've signed up for a K-12 account, and I am working on several VoiceThreads at my school right now. I have read the FAQs and watched the tutorials and read this forum, but I still have questions:

    1. Why are some invitees required to create a user id, but some access the VoiceThread without any such challenge even though they have been invited to the same thread at the same time in the same manner (I sent them an invitation by clicking their thumb in my friends' list and gave them comment rights)?

    2. Why do invitees who have only view rights get an invitation telling them that it's easy to add comments even though they can't?

    3. What was the $10 for? What can I do now that I couldn't do had I not paid the $10? It's not that the 10 bucks is going to make me or break me, I think what I'm doing now is well worth the $10, but I don't want to be missing out on a feature that I have but don't know about. In an answer about this above, it says "if you want to work in the Ed.VoiceThread network there's a one time $10 verification fee because it's an accountable network where there are no free accounts" but I have absolutely no idea what that means and what benefit it provides.

    Hi Rick,

    here's your answers(I hope;)

    1. Normally the way to send invites is to select each contact by clicking on their avatar in the 'Friends' list so that the whole thumbnail gets highlighted with a yellow border, and then click the invite button that's to the right. This grant them the right to comment in your Thread, and will also generate a link in the email that allows them to see it without being prompted to sign in. When you click the Comment button the way you were doing, it gives them the right to see and comment, but it does not automatically log them in. The different experiences of the people you invited probably has to do with the fact that some were already signed in within their browser and some were not.

    2. Your right, that could be confusing. The information in the e-mail refers to voicethreads in general not to the specific case where someone is invited to view only(.002 of voicethreads) It's a rare case but we should certainly try to provide better information in that instance.

    3. When you become a member of ed.voicethread there are two main advantages, the first is that your content that you create becomes visible to all the student users on ed.voicethread. The second, and really the most important is that you can start your own class or school subscription that allows you to create/manage student accounts. The whole point of ed.voicethread was to create an accountable environment that allows students to collaborate openly outside of their classroom, without having them interact with anonymous users and the content of anonymous users. So If you're going to use ed.V I would start a class subscription to see what it's all about. I'd be happy to give you a free one month trial, let me know and I'll set it up for you.

    Thanks,

Thank your for your prompt and helpful reply, Steve. I'll try to digest your answers. One thing I need to consider before I recommend our school (or district) to start a full-blown account is the nature of our student population. I can give you more information off list if it would help, but here's the short version: our school system has a restriction which does not allow posting any student's (or teacher's or parent's) picture, name, and location in one place on a public webserver. It would be ideal for us if anyone in our domain could access our VoiceThreads but no one else. Your one-classroom trial suggestion might be a good idea for the start of SY 08/09 in September.

NEW PROBLEM -- INVITEES CANNOT ACCESS VOICETHREAD. I created a VoiceThread and invited several students by adding their email addresses to my list of friends. When they clicked on the link in the message, they were challenged to login. They were not able to login with the "Sign In" method. We tried the "Register" method, but that didn't work either. It could be that we don't know what to enter for a password, but when I added them to my list of friends, I do not recall entering a password for them. I hope someone can help with this.

Well - this has been a learning experience - for all of us. The students have enjoyed working on this - but all of us have experienced some frustration along the way. I have 3 classes of 16 that I have had working on vt.s... we started with responding to some I created, or found... then we it came time to create our own - yikes... as soon as we went to the lab to upload - nothing happened. Our tech person had to sign on individually as each student - her computer would take them - the others were hit and miss. I assumed it was a problem on our end.

I wish I could manage my students' work like our wiki page - see when they are working, lock it at a due date, have them respond without inviting (or having the world see them.)

I am sure there are things I need to learn about managing the projects - I am just not sure where to get the information I need...

    Any ideas?
