General Discussion · [Sticky] Advanced Language Support, 1 to 1 of 1
VoiceThread supports the use of non-Latin scripts in text comments but that support is partial because our goal of a universal and simple multi-modal, multi-language commentary environment is a remarkably difficult one.
What does that mean?
It means that whenever a VoiceThread text comment contains a non-Latin character we check to see if the viewer has the appropriate font installed. If they do not, we'll immediate download the appropriate and display the proper fonts. No restarting your web browser or signing in and out, and zero configuration on the part of the viewer. If you type in a comment in Chinese then whomever you share that VoiceThread with will see your comment in Chinese even if their computer is lacking the required font. In addition, a single VoiceThread conversation can support text in multiple languages simultaneously, Chinese, Spanish, German, and French, all in one conversational space.
But because of the technical complexity of fonts and the way that different computers handle them we can't give direct technical support for this feature. Most commonly, issues are caused by incorrect script/character settings on your computer, but the there are many potential sources for failure, e.g. there is no current support for left to right formatting of text which is a big problem in scripts like Arabic and Hebrew. We'll keep working on solutions to these difficult technical questions but in the meantime we cannot provide specific support for any script problems you encounter.
We would suggest that if you run into language script problems that you cannot repair that you resort to the oldest tried and true method of communicating, voice, and if that doesn't work you can try the web cam option to comment. This way you could wave your arms around trying to describe that you
