HTML5 Version of VoiceThread

VoiceThread is now Flash free! You can move to the HTML5 version any time between August 1 and December 31 of 2017. Find more information about the transition and answers to frequently asked questions here.

As an administrator, how do I move my users to the HTML5 version of VoiceThread?

You’ll find a new option to control this in your Manager Settings area. To access that:

  1. Sign in to your administrative VoiceThread account.
  2. Go to your VT Home Page.
  3. Click on your email address in the top-right corner of the page.
  4. Select “Manager”.
  5. Click on the name of your institution, school, or license.
  6. Click on the “Settings” tab on the left.

On that page, you will see 3 options:

  • Require everyone to use the Flash version of VoiceThread — Keeps everyone on Flash until you move them to HTML5 manually.
  • Let each person decide whether to use Flash or HTML5 in their Display Preferences — Allows individuals under your license to move to HTML5 themselves if they would like. Please see the next section on this page for details about how they would do that.
  • Require everyone to use the HTML5 version of VoiceThread — Moves everyone to HTML5.

As an administrator, how do I test VoiceThread before moving all of my users?

First, follow the instructions above to set your preference to “Let each person decide whether to use Flash or HTML5 in their Display Preferences”.  This will not automatically move any of your users, but it will allow you and anyone else to opt in to the HTML5 version.

After you’ve made that change:

  1. Go to your VT Home Page.
  2. Click on your email address in the top-right corner of the page.
  3. Select “Display Preferences”.
  4. Select “HTML5” from the drop menu under Player Version.
  5. Refresh the page.

You can move back and forth between the two versions of VoiceThread until you are ready to move all of your users permanently.

* Note: If you do not have the option to change your selection here, that means your preferences in the Manager Settings (above) are still set not to allow individuals to make their own selection.

How do I try the HTML5 version if I am not part of a larger license?

If you have a VoiceThread account not affiliated with a license, you can make the move any time. To do that:

  1. Go to your VT Home Page.
  2. Click on your email address in the top-right corner of the page.
  3. Select “Display Preferences”.
  4. Select “HTML5” from the drop menu under Player Version.
  5. Refresh the page.

* Note: If you do not have the option to change your preference here, that means you are part of a license, and your administrator has already made this choice for you.

Which web browsers are supported?

Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox are supported fully.  Please make sure you are using the latest updates of these browsers for the best experience.

Microsoft Edge and Safari can be used to view VoiceThreads, but these browsers do not yet support audio or video recording in HTML5. As soon as they do, we will support recording in those browsers.  Internet Explorer does not support HTML5 at all and cannot be used with the new version.

What’s new in the HTML5 version?

In the supported web browsers, your users should not notice a difference in their experience. It should be a seamless transition. In addition to being inherently more secure and responsive, however, the HTML5 version allows you to change the playback speed of any VoiceThread you are viewing.

When is the deadline for moving to the HTML5 version?

You can make the move any time between August 1, 2017 and December 31, 2017.  After that date, everyone will be moved to the HTML5 version of VoiceThread automatically.
